April
Earth Day Town Hall with Commissioner Janet St. Clair
The very first Earth Day was established on April 22, 1970. Since then, over 1 billion people organize annually on Earth Day, and every other day, to protect the planet. Island County’s Marine Resource Committee is one way we work to protect our planet and the future of the Salish Sea. Join the Island County Marine Resources Committee (MRC) to celebrate Earth Day! Island MRC volunteers will present on the various community science programs the group focuses on, from monitoring bull kelp and forage fish to community stewardship events throughout the county and celebrate Earth Day with their 2025 project successes and “big wins!” Also join to learn more about the Island County Shore Friendly program and the difference homeowners can make in protecting our shoreline.
The upcoming Town Hall meeting will be from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. April 22, 2026, virtually. You can attend online here:

Forage Fish Community Workshop
The Island County Marine Resources Committee (MRC) is convening a collaborative workshop focused on expanding and strengthening citizen and community science for forage fish research and monitoring in the Salish Sea. This workshop will bring together scientists, community members, educators, resource managers, and policy partners to explore how public participation can advance forage fish science while informing shoreline management, conservation priorities, and science education.
The day will begin with context-setting presentations on the current state of beach-spawning forage fish science, connections between coastal research, local shoreline management, and policy, and emerging approaches in community and citizen science, including links to outdoor and place-based education. Participants will then engage in facilitated breakout sessions designed to explore potential research themes, monitoring approaches, and educational activities suited to community participation. Through collaborative discussion, participants will explore partnership opportunities, resource needs, and possible funding pathways to support new or expanded efforts.
